What is GEO and how to measure AI traffic in Search Console and GA4

· Organiq · third-party facts carry source and date in the text

GEO (generative engine optimization) is the work of getting a site cited in the answers of ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot and Google AI Overviews. It is measured from three sources: impressions in Search Console's generative-AI report, citations in Bing Webmaster Tools and sessions by source in GA4 (chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, gemini.google.com). The term comes from Aggarwal et al., KDD 2024.

What does GEO mean in practice?

A search engine returns ten links; a generative engine returns one answer and cites a few sources. GEO is writing and structuring the page to be one of those sources: direct answer at the top, numbers with source and year, self-contained passages, visible methodology, a named author and an update date. In the experiment that coined the term (Aggarwal et al., "GEO: Generative Engine Optimization", KDD 2024), adding citations raised position-weighted visibility by about 41%, statistics by about 31% and named sources by about 27%, while keyword stuffing lowered it by about 8%. It is a lab benchmark, not a guarantee.

How do I measure AI traffic in GA4?

In GA4 the assistants show up as referrals: chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, copilot.microsoft.com, gemini.google.com and claude.ai. Add up the sessions from those sources per day and compare with the site total. Organiq does this in the get_ai_traffic tool (sessions, active users, engaged sessions and key events per source, compared with the previous period) and in the "AI traffic" card of the dashboard. Limit: GA4 only sees people who clicked; an answer that cites the site without a click does not appear.

How do I measure AI impressions in Search Console?

Since August 31, 2026 the Search Console performance report has a generative-AI tab (AI Overviews and AI Mode) for every site: impressions only, no clicks, and several URLs of the same site in one answer count once. The API still does not separate clicks coming from those surfaces. Organiq shows generative-AI impressions and "AI-style" queries (conversational questions) in the dashboard with the GEO add-on; in the connector, query_top_queries with a question filter (how|what|why|which|when) lists the conversational demand the site already answers.

How do I measure citations in Bing?

Bing Webmaster Tools has had the AI Performance report since February 10, 2026: citations, cited pages and Copilot grounding queries. It is today the only official source with per-page citations. Metrics of different nature (impression, citation, session) are never added together; present the three side by side with the collection date.

What do I do with the numbers?

  1. Fix 3 target questions and ask them monthly to ChatGPT (with search), Perplexity and Gemini in a session without memory; record who was cited (share of answer).
  2. On the pages competing for those questions, apply the 9 citability dimensions (answer at the top, numbers with source, self-contained passages, real HTML tables, visible date, author).
  3. Publish with a cut-off date and wait 14 days before reading GA4 and Search Console.
  4. Use the geo-audit skill (in agent-skills and in the Claude Code plugin) to repeat the measurement with the connector's tools.

Frequently asked questions

Does GEO replace SEO?

No. The sources AI assistants cite come largely from the search index; a site that does not rank is rarely cited. GEO is a layer on top of technical and content SEO.

Does llms.txt get a site cited?

There is no evidence of that. No AI platform had documented support as of September 2026, Google says it is not needed for Search, and an Ahrefs study (June 2026, 137,210 domains) found 97% of the files with no requests at all. It is zero-cost hygiene, not a strategy.

Is there a schema.org type for appearing in AI Overviews?

No. Google states there is no special markup for AI features. Schema remains useful for entities (Organization, SoftwareApplication) and for rich results that still exist.

How much traffic comes from AI today?

It varies by niche; measure it in your own GA4. In Organiq's demo accounts (3 sites, 180 days, October 2026) chatgpt.com accounts for more than 90% of sessions from AI assistants, ahead of Copilot, Gemini and Perplexity.

Does Search Console show clicks from AI Overviews?

Not separately. The clicks are inside the web search total; only impressions have their own tab since August 2026. Falling clicks with stable impressions is consistent with AI Overviews taking the click, but it is a hypothesis, not a measurement.
