AI traffic in GA4: how to see sessions from ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Copilot
· Organiq · third-party facts carry source and date in the text
In GA4, traffic from AI assistants shows up as referrals: open Reports → Acquisition → Traffic acquisition, switch the dimension to "Session source" and filter for chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, gemini.google.com, copilot.microsoft.com and claude.ai. Organiq does this daily with the get_ai_traffic tool: sessions, active users, engaged sessions and key events per source, compared with the previous period.

How do I see ChatGPT and Perplexity traffic in GA4?
Use the Traffic acquisition report, which works with the "Session source" dimension (Google Analytics Help). Switch the primary dimension to session source and search for the assistants' domains. The names Organiq recognizes today (list from its own sync, October 30, 2026): chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, gemini.google.com, copilot.microsoft.com, claude.ai, bing.com/chat, you.com, phind.com, poe.com. GA4 may report variants of the same product; Organiq merges them (chat.openai.com → chatgpt.com, bard.google.com → gemini.google.com, copilot.com and m365.cloud.microsoft → copilot.microsoft.com). If an assistant opens the link without sending a referrer, the session lands in "(direct)" and cannot be attributed: the number you see is a floor, not the total. GA4's default channel group also has an "AI Assistant" channel, defined as medium exactly matching ai-assistant and described with "sources like ChatGPT, Gemini, Deepseek, Copilot, or Grok" (GA4 Help, October 30, 2026); a source GA4 does not tag that way stays under Referral, which is why the session-source check still matters.
What does the get_ai_traffic tool return?
For the requested property (or "all", the whole account) and period (default: 28 days up to the last synced GA4 day), it returns per source the sessions, active users, engaged sessions and key events, the comparison with the previous period, totals and the daily series. hasGa4=false means the property has no GA4 mapped: map it in the dashboard Settings, with the analytics.readonly scope. A question that works in Claude, ChatGPT or Cursor after connecting: "How many sessions came from ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini in the last 28 days, versus the previous 28?". Google access is read-only: the connector never writes to GA4 or Search Console.

How do I measure what GA4 cannot see: impressions and citations?
GA4 only counts people who clicked. An answer that cites the site without a click shows up elsewhere: Search Console's generative-AI report shows impressions (not clicks) in AI Overviews and AI Mode, for all sites since August 31, 2026 (Google, June 3, 2026). Organiq imports that report (get_genai_impressions) and measures conversational demand in Search Console queries (analyze_query_shapes, get_query_shape_trend), all three in the GEO add-on (US$ 9/month; included in Agency). Metrics of different nature (session, impression, citation) are never added together; show them side by side with the date. Full method in what is GEO.
What are the limits of this measurement?
- Sessions without a referrer become "(direct)"; the number is a floor.
- Only people count: AI crawlers do not execute the GA4 tag and do not appear here.
- Organiq reads GA4 once a day; the current day is not closed yet.
- Search Console does not separate clicks coming from AI Overviews; they sit inside the Search total.
- The assistant list is maintained by us and grows when a new domain shows up with volume; an assistant outside it counts as an ordinary referral.
Frequently asked questions
Does GA4 have a ready-made channel for AI assistants?
Yes: the default channel group has an "AI Assistant" channel, defined as medium exactly matching "ai-assistant", with ChatGPT, Gemini, Deepseek, Copilot and Grok as examples (GA4 Help, October 30, 2026). Perplexity is not named there, and a source GA4 does not tag stays under Referral, so filtering by session source remains the complete check.
Do I need to connect GA4 to Organiq?
Yes, for the get_ai_traffic tool and for the "AI traffic" card in the dashboard. Access is read-only (analytics.readonly) and each Search Console property is mapped to one GA4 property in Settings. How to connect: GA4, Bing and brand terms.
Which assistant sends the most traffic?
It depends on the site; measure it in your own GA4. In the demo property shown on this page (28 days, October 2026), ChatGPT accounts for 73% of the 425 sessions from assistants, followed by Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot and Claude.
Can I see which pages the assistants land on?
In GA4, add "Landing page" as a secondary dimension in the Traffic acquisition report. In Organiq, get_ai_traffic returns totals and the daily series per source; the per-page detail stays in GA4.
Does this count the ChatGPT crawler (GPTBot)?
No. Crawlers do not execute the GA4 tag. To see crawlers, use your server logs; to see citations, use Search Console's generative-AI report (impressions).
